Romo Returns to Cowboys — Withdraws from Open Qualifier

You probably heard by now that Dallas Cowboys quarterback,Tony Romo won’t be playing in the U.S. Open.  He withdrew from the 36-hole sectional qualifier on Monday after bad weather delayed it a second time.  For sure, starting his round with a quadruple bogey wasn’t exactly encouraging (see Tweets here).

Romo pulled out because he needed to return to the Cowboys on Tuesday for practice.  The way things were going, that qualifier round would have been continued on Tuesday.

In an AP story, Romo was quoted talking about what he learned from the experience and what he’d share with his Cowboy teammates.

“On the football field, we’re going and all of a sudden, we have two drives that stall,” Romo said. “Everyone is saying, ‘What’s going on? Why haven’t we done anything?’ We’ll talk about it, we’ll learn from it, we’ll go out and execute on the next one. No matter what happened in the past, it’s about the next play and about going forward and I think that’s what I tried to do today, and I was very proud of fighting back.”

The United States Golf Association said Romo would’ve become the fourth athlete from a professional team sport to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Phil & Tiger’s Off-Course Adventures…

At the Memorial Tournament,  which was won by Justin Rose with a flawless final round (he overcame a four-shot deficit and had one-putt greens on eight consecutive holes Sunday to close with a 6-under 66), there was a bit of off course play by some notable Tour members.

Phil Mickelson hit a terrible drive on the 15th that ended up far, far to the left into a creek that usually doesn’t come into play.  Instead of going back to the tee, he opted to take a one-shot penalty — playing his ball from a drop from the middle of the cart path on the 17th hole.

The drop was fraught with problems.  Both times his ball bounded down into the weeds, unplayable.  Per the rules, at that point, he is allowed to place the ball at the site of the drop, in this case in the middle of the blacktop.

Playing like he’s used to hitting off paved surface, Mickelson pulled out a 3 wood and cleanly picked the ball off the cart path, hitting a high draw that left him near the tee at the par-3 16th hole.  If only the rest of the course was through streets and parking lots, he would have won and claimed #1 position going into the U.S. Open.

Instead, Mickelson ended up three-putting for a double-bogey 7.  For the tournament, where he finished tied for 5th, putting was a challenge (he took 30 on his way to a 69).

Another golfer who spent time off-course was Tiger Woods.  He ended up hitting not one, not two, but three fans on three different holes.

According to an AP story appearing at Golfweek.com

“On his first swing on the first hole, Woods pulled his drive left and drilled 37-year-old Jeramy May in the neck. “I’m just glad they were on the other side,” May said, pointing toward his daughter and a friend.

On the second hole, Woods hit 19-year-old Alan Flood in the back of his left leg as he was standing far left of the fairway. Then at the 15th hole, Jimmy Craig of suburban Columbus was in the right rough when Woods’ drive hit him in the thumb and then the side.”

Tiger’s way of making it up to the people he hits is to give them an autographed golf glove.

On Sunday he remarked, “Thank God I get them for free.”

Errant shots at Pebble Beach in a few weeks may end up plunking an otter or sea lion.

Spare gloves won’t be an issue.  Extra sleeves of balls will.

Fun Times at EA Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 Golf Ad Shoot

This week, Tiger roars back… in ads.  To promote the release of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 which arrives on Tuesday, EA unveiled an ad campaign which is really fun.  In fact, based on the “behind the scenes” video, it looks like it was as much fun to shoot as it is to watch.

According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, the EA ads were shot on May 11 in Orlando.  The campaign, by San Francisco advertising firm Heat, includes online-video ads that will appear on sites such as Facebook.

In the Journal story, Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, was quoted saying, “It was time to bring some life and fun back into golf.”

Indeed!  Check out the clips below.  The “Team Golf” concept is communicated through Tiger and his mates participating in unusual golf environments: curling, soccer, hockey, etc.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 for the Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will be available on Tuesday.  List price is $59.95.

Did You Know? PGA Tour Texts Players Their Tee Times

PGA Tour Texts Players their Tee Times

…and you thought the only one doing the text messaging was Tiger Woods! Ok, ok, that was bad. Sorry.

The other day while reading the GolfCrunch Twitter Feed (follow us @GolfCrunchLive) I happened to notice a few tweets from British Open Champion Stewart Cink (@StewartCink). He first posted an image of one of the tee sheets posted in the locker room. This is typical week-to-week stuff that players see. In fact, in my younger playing days myself I can remember this being the case. I played in quite a few amateur tournaments, and it was normal (and expected) to see tee times posted in the locker room and pro shop… and in the local paper (of course!). Nothing about this shocked me at all, but Stewart’s following tweet certainly perked my interest.

Cink went on to note that the tour sends out text messages to each player, letting them know exactly when their tee time is. Talk about convenient! I trust that all tour players have a cell phone handy, as they are world travelers, are always on the road, and need some sort of communication device at all times to stay in touch with family. When the PGA Tour sends texts like this to players, it’s not only convenient, but it’s instant, and the tour can be assured players know INSTANTLY what their tee time is once the message goes out. Great stuff.

Golfsmith at it Again: $1M Club Giveaway…

Golfsmith just announced it is teaming up with TaylorMade Golf and a trio of golfers, two-time U.S. Open Champion Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia and Sean O’Hair, for a new national promotion tied to the U.S. Open Golf Championship.

Dubbed “Pick a Pro and Win,” it gives customers an opportunity to win new TaylorMade drivers, free of charge, if Garcia, Goosen or O’Hair, is victorious at Pebble Beach. Now through June 16 golfers who purchase one of three new TaylorMade drivers – the R9 Super Tri, Burner SuperFast or the R9 460 driver – at any Golfsmith store across the country will have the purchase price of their TaylorMade driver fully refunded by Golfsmith if the player they choose – Garcia, Goosen or O’Hair – wins the U.S. Open.

Golfsmith is running this promotion just months after Phil Mickelson’s Masters win resulted in the nation’s largest specialty golf retailer giving away a $1 million in golf clubs.  For the TaylorMade Golf promo, Golfsmith has purchased an insurance policy.  They also had a policy for the Mickelson giveaway.

In addition to the Pick a Pro promotion, Golfsmith is giving away $50, $75 and $100 gift cards when consumers purchase specific TaylorMade drivers, the R9 SuperTri, the R9 460 and the Burner SuperFast, respectively.

Golf Vendors Jump on Johnson’s Colonial Win…

Titleist sent out an email blast letting those who opted in know that their “Brand Ambassador,”  Zach Johnson trusted the Pro V1x golf ball and a bag full of Titleist equipment in his come-from-behind, record-setting performance at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Capping his seventh career win in style, Zach closed with consecutive rounds of 64 on his way to a tournament record score of 21-under par.

“When it comes to performance excellence, shot to shot, and round to round, more of the world’s best trust their game to Titleist.”

FootJoy also made an announcement about how Zach Johnson’s win was “the first for the new FJ SPORT golf shoe.

FJ SPORT is designed and developed for the player seeking bold, athletic-inspired performance golf shoes.  Utilizing striking patterns and color, FJ SPORT integrates proven performance attributes and premium materials. Zach wore FJ SPORT style #53102 and a StaSof glove during his most recent victory.

With a 21-under 259 total, Zach not only set a new tournament record, but recorded the lowest four-round total on the PGA Tour since FJ player Geoff Ogilvy won the season-opening SBS Championship at 22-under 270.

FootJoy took their announcement a step further than Titleist.  They have a campaign this PGA season called, “FJ WINS, YOU WIN.

It gives folks an opportunity to win FJ SPORT and StaSof, just like Zach wore en route to victory at Colonial.  You can enter by clicking here.

Also, here’s a FJ Sport feature overview:

  • Full Grain Leather Uppers  – for comfort, breathability, and durability.
  • 2-Year Waterproof Warranty
  • PU Coated Leather Toe Guard  – designed to prevent abrasion caused by toe-drag on the back foot during the follow through.
  • Athletic Mesh Liner  – for breathability.
  • EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) Fit-Beds  – provide lightweight cushioning underfoot.
  • Full TPU Outsole – creates a lightweight, durable and stable hitting platform.
  • Stinger cleats by CHAMP (white/black) –  provide superior traction throughout the entire golf swing.

Now the real question is, where in Johnson’s garage will he store his winning shoes?

Bridgestone Golf Tour Trio Top Money Lists

Bridgestone Golf has made it known that their Tour Team currently boasts three players ranked #1 on the Champions Tour, LPGA Tour and Nationwide Tour money lists, respectively.

Fred Couples has done so, relying on the Bridgestone Tour B330 golf ball which is optimized for  112+ MPH swing speeds, and J38 Dual Pocket Cavity Back irons.

In addition, Ai Miyazato, Bridgestone Golf worldwide tour team member, is the top money winner on the LPGA TOUR, having won 3 of the first 6 events of 2010. Miyazato trusts her game to a full bag of Bridgestone Tourstage equipment.

Rounding out Bridgestone’s “terrific trio” is Nationwide Tour rising star – Kevin Chappell. Through 9 events on the 2010 Nationwide Tour, Chappell has recorded 4 top 10’s including his first professional victory at the Fresh Express Classic.  Chappell’s equipment arsenal includes the Bridgestone Golf Tour B330-S golf ball, which is optimized for 103 – 115 MPH swing speeds, J38 driver, irons and wedges.

This is a nice little victory for Bridgestone Golf.  Titleist still rules the PGA Tour for the most part.  But 3 out of 4 isn’t bad!

California Here I Come – Romo Hopes So…

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is a step closer to playing the U.S. Open.  He earned one of seven qualifying spots Thursday at The Honors Golf Club of Dallas. Romo birdied three of his last four holes to shoot 69, then survived a four-for-three playoff to advance. He took just 12 putts on the back nine.  It was the first time in three attempts that Romo advanced to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.

Romo will play a 36-hole sectional qualifier June 7 at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. At least one player from each of 13 sectional qualifiers will advance to the U.S. Open that will be played June 17-20 at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.

In other local qualifying events held during the past two weeks, former MLB pitcher John Smoltz, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee and Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell failed to advance to sectional qualifying.

Match Play Returns to the LPGA This Weekend

This week, the LPGA is shaking things up with a match-play event.  Starting on Thursday, a field of 64 of the top women golfers will be competing for $1.5 million in prizes (first place winner will pocket $375,000 of that ).

The Sybase Match Play Championship, which is being held at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J. takes an interesting approach to setting up the initial pairings.  To start, there are four brackets which are named for the four LPGA players with the most LPGA career wins – Kathy Whitworth (88), Mickey Wright (82), Annika Sorenstam (72) and Patty Berg (60). The 64 players in the field will be given a number from 1-64 based on their Rolex Rankings. The top-32 players will be automatically seeded into the brackets. Their opponents will be determined through a blind draw.

Here are some of the pairings:

  • Jiyai Shin vs. Ai Miyazato – A battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 with the top world ranking up for grabs. This final would assure Asia goes 7-0 in LPGA events this season.
  • Michelle Wie vs. Morgan Pressel – Two of the best young Americans, former junior rivals, power player vs. precision player, with a big boost to American golf no matter which player wins.
  • Suzann Pettersen vs. Cristie Kerr – Two warriors in golf cleats, the intensity of the heat thrown off in this final could cause the grass beneath their footsteps to turn brown.
  • Se Ri Pak vs. Karrie Webb – Hall of Fame finish with two veterans who still rank among the great ball strikers trumping each other with their shot making.

The complete list of pairings can be found here.

The last time the LPGA sanctioned an official match-play event was three years ago when Seon Hwa Lee defeated Rolex Rankings No. 2 Ai Miyazato at the 2007 HSBC Women’s Match Play Championship held at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y.

As for the course, Hamilton Farm will “flip the 9s” with the course’s front nine holes becoming the back nine holes and the back nine holes will becoming the front nine holes. For the pure golf enthusiast, the Highlands golf course has both a Parkland and Scottish links feel, with rolling terrain and undulating greens. Bent grass is featured on greens, tees and fairways, with bluegrass rough and a fine fescue secondary rough.

The Sybase Match Play Championship will be televised on The Golf Channel.
